01. 질적으로(Quality) 낮추는 동사 reduce

 

오늘은 동사 reduce에 대한 이해를 좀 더 심화시켜 드리겠습니다.

 

보통 reduce의 의미를

​

자동사로는 '줄어들다. 감소하다'

타동사로는 '줄이다. 감소시키다'

​

로 알고계실 겁니다.

​

가만 생각해보면 위 의미들은 '양(quatity)'적인 개념을 가지고 있습니다.

​

줄이고 감소하는 것은 양(quatity)적인 측면을 낮추는 것이죠.

​

하지만

 

동사 reduce는 '질(quality)'적인 측면을 낮추는 것에도 사용됩니다.

​

그래서 뜻이 '낮추다. 격하시키다. 전락시키다'가 되며,

​

낮춰진 질적 상태를 전치사 to를 사용하여 나타냅니다.

​

따라서

 

'reduce A to B'가

 

'A를 B까지 격하시키다. 전락시키다'

 

라는 의미로 사용되며,

 

be reduced to 수동태 형태로 

 

'~까지 격하되다.' 의미로 자주 사용됩니다.
